There are mostly two kinds of wood but many more are classified under this two listed below:
(1) HARDWOOD
(2) SOFTWOOD
Any kind of wood can be used or utilised for furniture making.the ones listed below are the most appropriate and most used in view of quality, accessibility, solidness and expense..
HARDWOOD
OAK: Oak is most common in the south and east of England, with its wide irregular,rounded crown and grey fissure bark. In the 1700's oak tree were in high demand by ship builders and were grown especially for the purpose. oak is most widely used hardwood. it is popular in kitchen, floors and other cabinets. it is very heavy, strong, light colored, ring porous and durable.
MAPLE: There are many varieties of maple about 115 species, but generally it is very hard and it is resistant to shocks and also it makes beautiful durable furniture.
CHERRY: Cherry is a close-grained wood and it resists warping and shrinking. it is used in fine furniture and cabinets. often grown in the Eastern half of the united States and sometimes called "FRUIT-WOOD". it is moderately hard,strong and easy to carve and polish.
WALNUT: Walnut has widely been used for fine furniture and is still in demand till date. it is usually known as "AMERICAN WALNUT" or "BLACK WALNUT".
TEAK: Teak is a hard, moisture resistant wood. it is indigenous to southeast Asia. it is heavy, strong and durable. it resists cracking and decay and also it is the best used in fine furniture.
SOFTWOOD
ASH: Ash is a ring porous, heavy, hard and strong wood with about 16 species which grows in the Eastern US. it is widely used for structural frames and steam bent furniture pieces.
PINE: Pine is a softwood used for making furniture. it is light, straight grained and lacks figure. it is widely used in house construction furniture and for making boxes also it resists swelling and shrinking.
CEDAR: Cedar is very easy to work with and it is resistant to decay.it is extensively used in chest making, dock planks, shingles etc. its aromatic and moth repellent qualities have made it popular for lining drawers,chest and boxes.
FIR: Fir is used for making furniture, doors, frames, interior trim, windows, plywood etc. it has low resistance to decay and it is uniform in texture and non resinous.
